The Murray Law Group, P.C., formerly known as Vercruysse Murray, Vercruysse Murray & Calzone and Vercruysse, Metz & Murray, was formed in 1996 by four highly experienced and nationally recognized labor and employment attorneys specializing in providing counseling and litigation services to local and national employers. Our firm is located in the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Bingham Farms.
The formation of our firm was motivated in large part by the increasing demand from large and small businesses to be represented by highly skilled labor and employment attorneys without having to incur a portion of the large overhead costs of a full service law firm. Our legal practice is governed by one over-riding goal: to provide the best legal representation possible for our clients in a cost-efficient manner. We serve a large number of local, national, and international employers who value our creative and innovative solutions to their problems, our responsiveness and attention to detail, our ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, and our commitment to providing sound legal advice and obtaining the best possible results. In addition, because our office is not decorated in mahogany, does not contain valuable art work from around the globe, and does not include a penthouse view of the Detroit River, our clients do not incur the costs of these amenities in paying for the services the firm provides.
The response from clients has been tremendous. Since our formation as a labor and employment law boutique of eight attorneys, we have grown in 21 years to 14 attorneys, and we have added a business immigration practice group and developed specialties in commercial litigation, business torts, general litigation and real estate/eminent domain to complement our continued expertise in labor and employment matters on behalf of employers.
The national reputation of our firm has grown along with its size. Three of our attorneys – Gregory Murray, Susan Hartmus Hiser and William Altman – have been selected by their peers from across the United States as Fellow of the American Bar Association’s College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Murray, Hiser, Altman and Gary Fealk are also members of the American Employment Law Council. Six attorneys, including Murray, Dorothy Hanigan Basmaji, Hiser, Debra Auerbach Clephane, Ronald Reynolds and Kathleen Poppenger are listed in various editions of The Best Lawyers in America, and Murray, Basmaji, Hiser and Clephane are Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Debra Auerbach Clephane is the current Chairperson of the International Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Gregory Murray is an Executive Board Member of the Federal Bar Association. Susan Hartmus Hiser is a past Chairperson of the Labor and Employment Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Ronald Reynolds is a past Chairperson of the Real Property Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Our firm’s attorneys have a number of publications to their credit, including the monthly Michigan Employment Law Letter, several articles in legal periodicals, and chapter contributions and/or book editing responsibility for the following books: Employment Litigation in Michigan (ICLE 1999), Employment Litigation in Michigan, 2d Ed. (ICLE 2004), Employment Discrimination Law, 3d Ed. (BNA 2002), Michigan Wrongful Discharge and Employment Discrimination Law, 2d Ed. (ICLE 1994) and Employment Law in Michigan: An Employer's Guide, 2d Ed. (ICLE 2005). The firm’s attorneys are also frequently featured speakers at American Bar Association, state and local bar association and Institute for Continuing Legal Education programs and institutes.
The Murray Law Group’s attorneys specialize in labor and employment law, ERISA litigation, education law, business immigration law, commercial and business tort litigation, and general litigation representing private and public sector employers and multi-employer associations. A significant portion of our work comes from in-house counsel and law firms located across the country who have come to rely on our advice and expertise in resolving complex labor issues resulting from the sale, merger or acquisition of a corporation, plant closures, and large force reductions; sensitive employment issues such as problem employees, terminations, sexual harassment, and violence in the workplace; and complex cases involving difficult and cutting edge issues.
The Murray Law Group's Immigration Law practice is devoted to I-9 and immigration matters, with an emphasis on business immigration. The firm provides guidance to U.S. and non-U.S. employers who seek to employ foreign nationals in the United States, as well as facilitating the employment of U.S. workers abroad. The firm counsels management on strategic immigration issues related to establishing new U.S. enterprises and provides on-site employer training to human resource personnel and industry groups on issues such as temporary work classifications, student employment, national interest waivers, "special handling" for university professors, extraordinary ability and outstanding researcher petitions, permanent residence procedures, use of contract employees, I-9 compliance, NAFTA, and IRCA discrimination matters.
Recent developments in electronic communication and on-line resources are significantly changing the way many companies do business. The practice of law is no different. Our firm is committed to taking full advantage of the latest technology to enhance communications with clients, other law firms, and the courts. Our utilization of the latest technological developments has allowed us to continue our efforts to decrease the costs of legal services to clients while increasing our capability to take full advantage of the latest developments in the law.
