The History Behind Horwitz Horwitz & Associates
Jacob W. Horwitz was the first in the family to become an attorney. He founded the law firm that became Horwitz, Anesi and Ozmon. He practiced from 1921 until his death in 1963 representing workers. In the meantime, his son Andrew J. Horwitz became a principal partner in the firm.
Attorney Andrew J. Horwitz was a renowned trial attorney who pioneered the concept of “hedonic damages” that is now recognized across the nation. In 1978, Mitchell Horwitz, Andrew’s son, joined Andrew as one of his partners. In 1988, Clifford Horwitz (another of Andrew’s sons), after having achieved a string of record-setting jury verdicts, joined his brother and father as a partner in what became Horwitz Horwitz & Associates.
Since 1924, the Horwitz family of distinguished Chicago trial attorneys has continued a tradition begun by grandfather, Jacob W. Horwitz, and then his son Andrew J. Horwitz, representing individuals against corporate wrongdoers and insurance companies who routinely take advantage of those who have been injured. Clifford and Mitchell Horwitz are third generation Chicago injury lawyers who continue that tradition. Our firm has never represented corporate interests and never will.
The Horwitz Brothers
Clifford Horwitz heads the lead trial team and has won virtually every case he’s taken to trial since the start of his career, with over 25% of his victories representing record-setting jury verdicts. Mitchell Horwitz leads the workers’ compensation team and was recently named one of the Top 10 Workers’ Compensation Lawyers in Illinois in a survey of his peers conducted by LeadingLawyers.
About Horwitz Horwitz & Associates
Our team of eight Partners and eight Associate attorneys continue to expand the Horwitz Horwitz & Associates legacy of successful litigation that few firms can claim.
In a recent example of our firm’s record of excellence, Clifford Horwitz, Jay Luchsinger and Michael Carter won another record setting jury verdict of $64 million for an injured ironworker who fell and was left paralyzed from a job-site accident. The American Association of Justice branded Clifford, Jay and Michael as “masters in the profession.” According to the Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter, when the jury returned their verdict, it was the highest ever in the state of Illinois for an individual.
Less than two years after recovering what was the largest verdict in Illinois history, the lead trial team secured another record-setting verdict in Illinois history on behalf of an injured carpenter. The verdict was the highest ever in the state of Illinois for a non-amputation hand injury – the jury awarded $5.745 million.
Then, in 2016, the lead trial team set another two records in back-to-back trials. In the first trial, the jury returned a record $10 Million verdict for a complex regional pain syndrome injury. Less than a month later, the lead trial secured what was the largest verdict in Illinois history for an adult male shoulder injury.
Worker’s compensation attorneys, like Marc Perper, Wayne Newman, and Mark Weissburg are vital components to the success we have established as Illinois and Chicago workers’ compensation attorneys.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of working men and women in Illinois will benefit from Marc Perper’s work. Marc convinced the Illinois Supreme Court to reverse an unfavorable appellate court decision in 2010. The Supreme Court agreed with Marc that when an employer fires an individual while the person is on temporary light duty, regardless of whether the firing is for “cause” – the employer must reinstate weekly disability benefits. Injured workers are obviously extremely vulnerable when they lose weekly disability benefits because their daily existence depends upon it. The decision of the Supreme Court of Illinois will help thousands of these injured workers.
Wayne Newman is a past president of the Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Association (WCLA). The organization has a membership of over 700 workers’ compensation attorneys, and is dedicated to providing continuing legal education, as well as promoting the fellowship, of Illinois State Bar members practicing workers’ compensation. In addition to his peers, members of the news media have recognized his authority in the field. In an article in SmartMoney magazine, Wayne discussed why many professionals who decide not to file workers’ compensation claims eventually regret that decision.
Mark Weissburg authored the book, “How to Win a Workers’ Compensation Claim in Illinois.” The book provides useful insight into the secrets that insurance adjusters do not want you knowing, the three basic rights you have under the Workers’ Compensation Act, amendments to the Workers’ Compensation Act, red flags that will alert you to problems up ahead, and many more useful tips. If you would like a copy of Mark’s book for free, call our Chicago office at (312) 372-8822 or our Toll-Free line at 1-(800)-985-1819.
